Development and Dissemination of Improved Cassava Varieties in Uganda: Analysis of Adoption Rates, Variety Attributes and Speed of Adoption AgEcon
Abele, Steffen; Twine, Edgar; Ntawuruhunga, Pheneas; Baguma, Yonah; Kanobe, Charles; Bua, Anthony.
The transition out of extreme poverty and hunger in agrarian economies requires an understanding of how new agricultural technologies are adopted by poor farmers. In Uganda, improved germplasm from the cassava breeding program has generated new varieties that are increasingly being grown by farmers. Although considerable success has been achieved in adoption of these varieties in general, there is increasing pressure on breeding and technology dissemination programs to improve the targeting of their efforts. This paper identifies the specific cassava varieties adopted thus far and their desirable and undesirable attributes. In addition, it determines the adoption rates of these varieties and the factors that have influenced the speed of adoption of the...

Genetic selection Pinus greggii progeny to the establishment of seed orchards PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Aguiar, Ananda Virgínia de; Sousa, Valderês Aparecida de; Shimizu, Jarbas Yukio.
The main deterrent to the adoption of new species for operational plantations is the availability of  genetically improved seeds in sufficient amount to supply the  market. Therefore, this study was carried out with the objective to estimate genetic parameters for individual selection as a basis to transform the field trial into a seedling seed orchard. The trial contained forty seven half-sib families from five Mexican provenances, including northern and central Mexico sources. These were planted at Ponta Grossa, Paraná State, Brazil, in arandomized complete block design with nine  replications of five-tree linear plots in a 3 m x 3 m spacing. Height, dbh (diameter at breast height) and stem form were assessed in thirteen-year old tree. Variance...

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN RADICAL INFESTATION OF Hylastinus obscurus (MARSHAM) AND THE YIELD OF CULTIVARS AND EXPERIMENTAL LINES OF RED CLOVER (Trifolium pratense L.) R.C. Suelo Nutr. Veg.
Alarcón,Daniela; Ortega,Fernando; Perich,Fernando; Fernando,Pardo; Parra,Leonardo; Quiroz,Andrés.
Red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) is a valuable forage legume grown alone or in mixture with grasses in temperate regions of the world. Red clover is adapted to a wide range of soil types, pH levels, environmental and management conditions. However, the main limitation of this species is the lack of persistence related to the high mortality of plants. In Chile the main biotic factor affecting survival of plants is the root borer Hylastinus obscurus (Marsham) (Coleóptera; Scolytidae). In 1989, a red clover (T. pratense L.) breeding program was started at Carillanca Research Center of the Institute of Agricultural Research (INIA), Chile, with the main objectives of improving the survival of plants, forage yield and persistence. In 2002 a research line to...

Description et fonctionnement d'une installation en circuit fermé destinée à l'élevage de larves et juvéniles de soles. Premiers résultats ArchiMer
Alayse, J.p.; Lahaye, J..
The experimental unit used previously in our laboratory for the study of the effect of the photoperiod on the growth of flatfish was based on the use of tanks with separate recirculation systems. We modified it, connecting the different tanks to a single, more powerful recirculation system. This new unit comprised four different parts s - a biological filtar and an ultraviolet sterilizer. - a gravity operated water distribution system. - a series of 12 rearing tanks. - a piping system connecting the tank outlets to the biological filter. The total volume of the unit was 8 900 l. 200 l were changed every week. The main advantages of this new unit was that the quality of the water supplied to all tanks could be exactly the same, and that various parameters...

Breeding activity of Scinax centralis (Anura, Hylidae) in Central Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Alcantara,Mariana B.; Lima,Leôncio P.; Bastos,Rogério P..
From January, 1997 to April, 1998, we studied breeding activity in a population of Scinax centralis Pombal & Bastos, 1996, in the state of Goiás, inside the Cerrado Biome, Brazil. The behavior of males and females in the choruses, the relationships between environmental variables and the presence of individuals, the spatial distribution pattern, amplexus and clutches were analyzed. The breeding season occurred from November to May. The majority of males began to call when they entered the chorus; they were defending their calling sites against other males. We found a positive correlation between the number of females and males in the choruses, but no significant correlation was observed between the operational sexual ratio (OSR, number of...

Genetic diversity of irrigated barley based on molecular and quantitative data and on malting quality PAB
Amabile,Renato Fernando; Faleiro,Fábio Gelape; Vieira,Eduardo Alano; Peixoto,José Ricardo; Capettini,Flávio; Ribeiro Júnior,Walter Quadros.
The objective of this work was to quantify the genetic diversity of elite genotypes of irrigated barley in the Brazilian savanna. Thirty elite barley genotypes from Embrapa Cerrados' collection were evaluated using 160 RAPD markers, 12 agronomic traits related to yield components, and 10 malting quality parameters. The genetic dissimilarity matrices based on molecular markers, quantitative traits, and malting quality characters were calculated and a cluster analysis was performed using the unweighted pair-group method with arithmetic mean (UPGMA) as grouping criterion. High genetic diversity among accessions were observed. The estimated genetic dissimilarities were weakly correlated, showing the complementarity of the different character groups. Selection...

Behaviour of captive Ostrich chicks from 10 days to 5 months of age R. Bras. Zootec.
Amado,Marina Freire; Xavier,Diego Batista; Boere,Vanner; Torres-Pereira,Carla; McManus,Concepta; Bernal,Francisco Ernesto Moreno.
The behaviour of ostrich chicks bred in captivity was studied by using groups with 30 birds in five age groups: from 10 to 40 days of age; from 41 to 60 days of age; from 61 to 90 days of age; from 91 to 120 days of age and from 121 to 150 days of age. Six birds at each age were ringed around one of their feet and observed for four consecutive days for eight hours daily in three periods (in the morning, at noon and in the afternoon), following the "one-zero" method for sampling. The order for observation of behaviour of the six selected birds was performed randomly at every thirty minutes, totalling 16 periods or 80 minutes/bird/day. Fourteen types of behaviour were observed. There were differences among ages for behaviour like standing, walking, running,...

ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to conduct selection, genetic parameter estimation, and prediction of genetic values for 18 S1 families of guava trees using mixed model methodology and simultaneous selection of traits by means of the additive selection index, multiplicative selection index, and mean rank adapted from Mulamba. All families analyzed were obtained by means of self-fertilization of superior genotypes (full siblings) from the genetic breeding program of guava trees at the Universidade Estadual do Norte Fluminense. An experimental randomized block design with 18 S1 families, three replicates, and ten plants per plot was used. A total of 540 genotypes (individual plants) of guava tree were evaluated. Genetic parameter estimation and...

Breeding for diversity – political implications and new pathways for the future Organic Eprints
Andersen, Regine; Bocci, Riccardo; Howlett, Sally; Pearce, Bruce; Dunsire, Gaina; Rey, Frederic; Nuijten, E.; Andersen, Rikke Thomle; Pedersen, Tove Mariegaard; Miceli, F.; Slabe, Anamarija.
At present, around 95% of organic production is based on crop varieties that were bred for the conventional high-input sector, lacking important traits required under organic and low-input production conditions. Populations with a high level of genetic diversity are promising for OA (organic agriculture) conditions due to their adaptation, resilience and performance stability in different environments. Organic farming will benefit from cultivars (populations, varieties) that can cope with multiple stresses such as weeds, diseases, pests, climate change and low nitrogen input from manure. In the COBRA project (Coordinating Organic Plant Breeding Activities for diversity), plant genetic diversity and its potential have been investigated from both an...

Biometric evaluation of morpho-agronomic traits in pepper lines and hybrids Horticultura Brasileira
Andrade Júnior,Valter C; Pedrosa,Carlos E; Miranda,Thalita G; Valadares,Nermy R; Pereira,Samuel L; Azevedo,Alcinei M.
ABSTRACT In this study, we aimed to evaluate pepper lines and hybrids (Capsicum chinense and C. annuum) in order to obtain information on agronomic performance, heterosis, heterobeltiosis, phenotypic correlations and genetic dissimilarity. We evaluated lines PIM-030, BGH-433, BGH-4285, Numex Sweet, Numex Garnet and simple hybrids Numex Sweet x PIM-030, Numex Garnet x PIM-030 and BGH-4285 x BGH-433. The research was conducted with eight treatments and four replications in a greenhouse, at campus JK of UFVJM. Twenty two agronomic traits were evaluated. The hybrid BGH-4285 x BGH-433 presents higher heterosis and heterobeltiosis for total fruit productivity and productivity of total fruit dry mass, information of great value for future breeding studies. The...

Gestalt, Geruch und Geschmack von Weizen im DOK-Anbauvergleichsversuch Organic Eprints
Arncken, C.; Weibel, F.P.; Mäder, P..
This project was designed as an iterative process of describing quality profiles of “organic” and “high-quality” wheat and finding adequate, sensory-based methods to do so. Wheat growing in 1998-2000 at the DOK long-term field trial (FLIEßBACH et al. 2007, MÄDER et al. 2002) was repeatedly investigated. The ripening phase started earlier and lasted longer in treatment D2 (bio-dynamic) and was shortest in treatment K2 (conventional). Coded grain samples were examined in respect to treatment differ-ences in smell and taste. For D2 samples the author used the highest number of “sweetness” terms and the lowest number of other terms, whereas in M (conven-tional/mineral fertilizer only) grains, the highest numbers of “poorness” terms and the lowest of...
